Q:What happens when I first begin to use a hearing aid?
A:You will begin to hear sounds you may not have heard in years. While that sounds wonderful, it is very important to realize and understand that a number of sometimes conflicting things are beginning to happen. The brain of the new hearing aid user has a learning curve that will result in the user getting the greater benefits of the hearing aids after about six weeks of constant use.
Here is what is happening. With our natural hearing, the brain becomes educated, based on the individualís needs, to bring certain sounds to your attention and to discriminate and filter out those sounds that donít necessarily need to be brought to your attention all of the time. For example: the new hearing aid user will notice an air-conditioner or a fan in a room all of the time at first. Then after a while, wonít notice those sounds at all. The same thing happens in regard to background noise, the most common complaint of new users. Most background noise will soon again be relegated to the background, because thatís where the brain will put it, and not bring it to the up front attention of the individual wearing hearing aids.
This entire scenario can be aggravating, but it takes patience. It happens because the brain is hearing every sound at a volume level it hasnít heard in years, so the brain then brings every sound to the attention of the user. After about two weeks of hearing aid use, the brain has sorted through most the new sounds and has delegated them into categories of which ones need to come to the attention of the individual and which can remain in the background or go unnoticed. About 70% of this learning curve is complete in about two weeks with the remainder becoming complete after about six weeks of hearing aid wear.
The longer you use them, the greater the benefit as the brain becomes re-educated to which sounds you want to hear and which to allow to go unnoticed. As the weeks of use go by, the pleasure in using your new hearing aids will increase, and your new sense of hearing will become more natural and more useful.
No hearing aid will do this for you automatically, no matter what the brand, no matter what the programming. This is a conditioning process that you must be willing to do for yourself in order for your relationship with a hearing aid to be successful and, therefore, derive the benefits that follow.
Q: How do I know this will work for me?
A: This works for almost 95% of those who try it. There is no risk in seeing if it's right for you.
Q: What about programming for my own hearing needs?
A: This instrument is programmed in the manufacturing process to increase the amplification to the frequencies from the middle of the human voice range and higher. These are the frequencies that people tend to lose first and lose the most.
Q: Do I need a prescription or a hearing test?
A: Neither are required, however, you will be sent a medical waiver stating that you believe you are a candidate for a hearing aid and that you waive any requirement for a hearing test. Remember, it is always in your best interest to have an examination by a hearing professional or medical doctor before purchasing a hearing instrument.
Q: What about the fit?
A: The instrument can be moved slightly in and out of the ear for the right fit and we have solutions for many special fit problems.
Q: What about the quality of the components?
A: Each NaturEar is made of the very finest electronics contained in a structure of medical-grade silicone assembled under strict supervision.
Q: Why do some hearing aids cost so much, even thousands more?
A: Some hearing aid prices combine the cost of the instrument with the cost of long-term customer service. NaturEar only charges for the instrument itself. There is a need for that in-person service for some people and a price that goes along with it. For everyone else, NaturEar is an excellent answer.
Q: What is the difference in NaturEar and other hearing aids?
A: The main difference is the comfort of the fit. A traditional hard-shell hearing aid is molded to fit your ear canal. That would seem to be ideal, but the problem is that your ear canal moves slightly as you move your jaw. That causes discomfort and annoyance for many people. The firm but flexible material of NaturEar solves that problem. NaturEar wearers who have worn a hard-shell hearing aid are almost always immediately pleased with the fit and comfort of NaturEar. Here's an easy way to understand what we mean: Place a finger in your ear and open and close your mouth. Your finger will feel your jaw move. That is the feel of the living, moving ear canal. Imagine having a hard piece of plastic in your ear all day that does not flex with the ear canal as your jaw moves. The other aspect are superior electronics made only for NaturEar. In addition, NaturEar has the process patented that allows the silicone to be bonded to the faceplate. That's why other so-called soft hearing aids generally consist of latex covering a hard body. Many people are allergic to latex which can cause a reaction for some inside the ear canal. The NaturEar is non-allergenic and will not irritate the ear.
Q: How long will a NaturEar last?
A: With proper care, a hearing aid can last for years, but much depends on the individual and how they handle the instrument. The climate of the individual ear also makes a difference. Even so, hearing aids can always be repaired and our extended warranty protection guarantees free replacements. Hearing aids last differently and require repairs depending on the owner. You must remember that you are placing a tiny container of electronics in a warm, moist atmosphere that is heated to 98.6 degrees and leaving it there for hours. It is important that you have some type of drying method such as Dri-Aid or Moisture Guard to put the instrument in at night to remove the moisture and help insure longer, more trouble-free performance.
Q: What about tinnitus or ringing in the ears
A: A hearing aid may offer relief for tinnitus sufferers by masking or covering the ringing. This is the result of sound being reintroduced to the ear canal. The degree of the result depends on the individual.
Q: What about batteries?
A: NaturEar uses #10 batteries that come on cards of four, six, eight, or more, and are available everywhere for a few dollars per card. They last about two weeks.
